All incoming USC students must complete the On the Safe Side training. This training is required for all incoming students and must be completed by the due date indicated on your MyUSC page. Log in to my.usc.edu for details.
To complete the training, you must play through the game On the Safe Side. There are two ways to receive credit for doing this. You can play the game on your desktop or laptop through TrojanLearn, or you can play the game on your iPhone or Android mobile device and enter the code you receive into TrojanLearn.
Desktop and Laptop Users
Using Chrome or Firefox, log in to my.usc.edu and follow the link for On the Safe Side. You will be taken to the TrojanLearn system, where you can launch the game.
You have completed On the Safe side when you reach the final screen of the game that reads "Thank you for playing On the Safe Side." At this point, your completion will be automatically recorded in TrojanLearn.
Using an updated version of iOS or Android on a compatible mobile device, you can play On the Safe Side on your phone and then enter a verification code into TrojanLearn to record your completion. To find the On the Safe Side app, simply search the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store for "On the Safe Side."
When you reach the final screen of the game that reads "Thank you for playing On the Safe Side," there will be a unique verification code. Write down this code and enter it through TrojanLearn to have your completion recorded. To do this, log in to my.usc.edu and follow the link for On the Safe Side. This will take you to the TrojanLearn system. Once you've launched the game, select the option to enter your confirmation code.
On the Safe Side will taking most users about 40 minutes to complete.
On laptop and desktop computers, the optimal browser for On the Safe Side is Chrome. If you are having trouble accessing the training, first try the following steps:
Firefox or Safari
Because Chrome is the optimal browser, please try Firefox or Safari only if you are unable to get the game to run under Chrome. Internet Explorer is not recommended for On the Safe Side and may not be able to run the game.
For Safari or Firefox users, there are some complications with the new WebGL platform and older graphics cards. Below are some notes on WebGL compatibility with Firefox:
Firefox on Windows
For WebGL in Firefox on Windows, Windows XP or newer is required. The following minimal driver versions are required: either NVIDIA >= 257.21, or ATI/AMD >= 10.6, or Intel driver versions from September 2010 or newer.
Firefox on Mac OS X
For WebGL in Firefox on Mac, Mac OS 10.6 or newer is required.
If your mobile device is not supported, please complete the On the Safe Side training on a laptop or desktop computer through my.usc.edu.
This page should have opened in a separate tab on your browser. Check the top of your browser window for other open tabs. It's also possible that On the Safe Side is open in a different window and is being covered up. Go to the "Window" menu at the top of your screen and try selecting a different option. The game may be in a window titled "Launch".

You can access "On the Safe Side" through the TrojanLearn website. The course should appear on your personalized TrojanLearn page. Make sure you are using a supported browser with the popup blocker disabled when you launch the course.

Are you an incoming USC student this semester (freshman undergraduate student, first year graduate student, or transfer student)? The On the Safe Side couse is only required for students who have just begun their first semester at USC.
Please check the status of the course under your transcript on the TrojanLearn website. If the course shows as completed there, then you can ignore any further reminders.
If you completed the course, then your account should update shortly to reflect this and any related registration hold will be removed. It may take an hour or two for this process to complete. If you took the course online through TrojanLearn, you did not need to enter a completion code. To verify that your completion registered with the system, you can check the status of the course under your transcript on the TrojanLearn website. If you've waited more than three hours and your account still shows a registration hold, please contact the TrojanLearn support staff so that they can investigate the matter further. They can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
There are two parts to the course. In one, you must click on the screen to advance comic panels and dialogue, and select dialogue choices to choose what you want the character to say. In the other part, you must navigate the USC campus using the on-screen arrows to reach specific destinations. You can view your destination by clicking on the map in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
Selecting dialogue choices and navigating the USC campus progresses the character through a story about identifying and handling dangerous situations. Generally, students are able to complete this story in around 30 to 45 minutes. However, you must actively progress the story to complete the course. There is not a strict timer or time limit on the game.
